Bodelwyddan Castle Fun Days

We always get to see such wonderful places when we’re performing, and Bodwleyddan Castle is no exception. Set in 260 acres of parkland in Denbighshire, Bodelwyddan Castle is also a partner of the National Portrait Gallery and houses portraits from their 19th century collection, as well as sculpture from the Royal Academy of Arts, and furniture from the Victoria and Albert Museum.

For the past two weekends, we’ve been performing shows in the Dining Room. Working in such a wonderful room, in full Victorian costume, felt like stepping back in time. The Dining Room may well have seen magic shows before, as parlour magic was a very popular entertainment form back in the Victorian Era. Some of the most famous names in magical history, such as Maskelyne and Devant were at their height during this time.

The first weekend was Bodelwyddan Castle’s Victorian Birthday Party, to celebrate 25 years of the castle and park. The second was a family fun day themed around Knights and Princesses. There were all sorts of fun things to do, including a bouncy castle, a juggler, a stilt walker, a dancing statue, and lots of traditional games.

Our magic shows were very popular with the guests at both weekends – and our audiences almost completely filled the Dining Room! The adults and the children both enjoyed seeing our tricks and illusions.

While we were at the Castle, we took some time to explore the building. One one of the upper floors, we came across a room full of toys and games from the Victorian Era. We also found something a little unexpected, but which we were absolutely delighted to see…

The Egyptian Hall in London first showed this effect on the 16th of October 1865, after weeks of cryptic announcements in the newspapers. Queen Victoria herself summoned the magician to Windsor Castle for a private performance of the illusion that had taken London by storm.

Seeing such a classic magical effect was the perfect end to a wonderful weekend!

Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza: Sunshine and Showers (part one)

We’ve just finished two weekends of street magic, and they couldn’t have been more different.

Firstly, we took part in the annual Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza. It’s a three day event that fills the streets with rides and attractions, and brings the town centre to a standstill.

Early in the morning, the streets were almost deserted, but things soon got busier as all the visitors arrived.

We spent most of the time walking around the Extravaganza, performing close up magic for people in the street, and posing for them to take photographs.

Each day, we did one show on the promenade stage – our Mystic Emporium show. It was the first outing for the Mystic Emporium on a stage, with a performance specially designed for outdoor work.

Then we joined in the daily parade around the town, with Kevin the bird and Trix the dog.

It was a little chilly first thing on Saturday morning, and it rained for a short while, but the rest of the weekend was lovely and hot with some glorious sunshine.

We had a great time, but wearing heavy Victorian costumes in bright sun got rather warm!

A huge thank you to the Official Photographer of the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, Robert Mann, for letting us use his wonderful images. You can see the whole set of photographs by clicking here.

The weekend after the Extravaganza we were at another outdoor event, but the weather was a complete contrast. Find out all about it in Part Two, coming soon!

Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza 2013

llandudno-victorian-extravaganza

We’ll be performing at the annual Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza again this year, on the 4th, 5th and 6th of May.

We will be roaming the streets all weekend, ready to amaze the crowds with close up magic right before their eyes.

And at 12 noon each day, we’ll be on the Promenade Stage with our new show.

2013 will be our sixth year working at the Extravaganza, each year brings something different and exciting, and we’re really looking forward to being part of this amazing event once more.

We’ve had a glimpse of this year’s programme, and there’s a very familiar looking figure on one of the pages!

This photo was taken back in 2010, and it was a lovely surprise to see it had been included in the programme.

The Extravaganza runs from Saturday the 4th of May to Monday the 6th of May.

Backstage at Llandudno Summer Shows: Costumes

This is part two of our behind the scenes look at the shows we took part in over the summer at Llandundo town hall. Part one is here.

Jay had a lot of different costumes this year, with a grand total of nine costume changes in all. I’ve put together a selection of photographs which show you just some of the different outfits that he wore.

Here he is, taking a chance to relax before the start of the show.

Left to Right: Ready for the pub scene, in character for the Box Sketch, and the two costumes he wore for our 1940s themed magic routine.

And finally, the pictures that I’ve been waiting all year to put on the blog! We’ve been keeping quiet about this, so as not to spoil the surprise for our audiences, but now that the shows are over, I can show you the photographs:

Yes, that’s a photograph of Jay in a wig and high heels, dressed up as one of the Andrews Sisters! The three guys did a brilliant job of miming along to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, complete with dance routine.

All the shows that we did in Llandudno town hall were with Happy Faces Children’s Charity – a local charity which raises funds for disabled and disadvantaged children all over North Wales.
